Eaton Mews South
Belgravia, London
A mews is a small narrow lane, usually cobblestoned, where horses and carriages used to be sheltered. They are behind larger houses. Mews are quiet areas with much charm and atmosphere. Mews houses are now highly prized.
Enter the house directly into a large room that serves as the dining room. A glass-topped iron table comfortably seats six. The room has interesting art and objets d'art, features an Oriental rug and the walls are hand-painted wallpaper above ochre wainscoting.
Walk through the dining room into the bright modern kitchen. It is sleek and up-to-the minute. It has glass-fronted cupboards and elegant marble counter tops. There's a large refrigerator/freezer, a stainless steel oven and hood, a 6-burner stove, a dishwasher, a built-in microwave and a built-in cappuccino machine! There is a sound system and a TV. The large window over the sink lets in lots of light.
A small, nice guest powder room is tucked under the stairs that lead up to the next level. The washer/dryer is in a cupboard in the powder room.
The sitting room is upstairs. It's a large and gracious room that has two comfortable sofas and two easy chairs, an upholstered ottoman, a wall of books, a gas fireplace, an Oriental rug over beige carpet. Art and personal touches create a cozy feeling.
There is a flat-screen TV, a DVD player and a CD player. Beautiful red and gold drapes dress the tall windows that look out onto the mews. French doors open onto a tiny balcony. A small alcove has a bay window where a red sofa provides a nice place for afternoon reading.
A small study has a comfortable and attractive chair bed (like a sofa bed, but for one person, a child would be best), a mahogany cupboard, wall to wall built-in bookcases with many interesting books on the shelves, a computer, a chess set, a phone and high speed Internet. The walls are covered with a rich green on green design.
Up another level you will find the bedrooms. The master bedroom has an antique 4-poster queen bed, bedside tables, a chest of drawers and large built-in closets. English prints hang on the walls and there is a large window. Colors are beige and white with green and red on the window fabric. The large en suite bathroom has a long, deep tub with a hand-held shower and a separate shower stall and there are twin basins.
The other bedroom has twin beds that can be pushed together, an antique chest of drawers and excellent closet space. Colors are red and blue. The en suite bathroom has tub with a hand-held shower.
Up a more stairs, a low door opens onto a roof terrace. There's a small refrigerator just inside the door and a cupboard that holds a dining service for 8. The terrace has many potted plants and outdoor furniture, including a dining table. It has views of roof tops and chimneys. It is a green oasis - even in winter.
Heating and electricity are extra, charged at cost by meter readings. A security deposit of £350 is held by credit card until after departure. We regret that this house is not suitable for children under 10.
