Vivianne's Bayside Cottage

County Galway, Ireland

spacer line

Vivian’s Bayside Cottage in Clifden is a gorgeous modern cottage that was designed and decorated with an eye to comfort and style.  It is a very special place that shows exquisite attention to detail in every room.  The best word for this cottage is "refined".

The front door is part of the house that was the original cottage. Everyone enters directly into the kitchen, in the new part of the house. It is large, open, room modern and very attractive. It is a modern version of a traditional country kitchen.  There's an oven, hob, refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, microwave and beautiful kitchen necessities. Glass-fronted cupboards are painted white. Counter tops are wood. The long farmhouse table seats eight on carefully chosen mis-matched chairs.  There is a small wood stove, a comfortable wing chair and a pine dresser filled with pretty dishes. Colors are white, cream and sea foam green. Floors are stained wood. The view is of the bay.

Two steps down, the living room offers beautiful views of Streamstown Bay. The walls are a soft, light gray and the room has a coral sofa, two comfortable easy chairs and several other interesting chairs, a low white chest, a graceful demi-lune table, many books in a beautiful bookcase, an artistic screen in a corner, and a tall turf burning fireplace. Art is primarily by Irish contemporary painters although there is a very old plaster frieze set into the wall.  There is cable TV, DVD and a music centre. This is such a lovely room.

From the kitchen, a long a long stone-floored hall takes you to the bedrooms.  First, there is a guest powder room.  Then there's a crisp and clean laundry room that has an additional refrigerator, a sink and a washer and dryer.

Two bedrooms are further down the hall. One bedroom has a single bed with a gold cotton cover, a painted built-in wardrobe, a view of the water and hillside. This room is spare and peaceful with carefully selected art and walls painted a color that one can't quite name, but it's soft and warm. The en suite bathroom has a good shower and a wall sink.

The second bedroom is the master bedroom with a 5'6" wide bed (between a queen and a king size) and a rust cotton bed cover. A small chest of drawers, a painted built-in wardrobe and a beautiful dressing table, nice bedside tables and a dark wood floor complete the room. The walls are painted a color called Olive Fog and that's the perfect name for it.  The en suite bathroom has a long, deep tub with a shower over tub.

The hall ends at the beginning of the original cottage.  Two additional bedrooms and a bathroom are in this part of the house.

One bedroom has a standard double bed with a pretty yellow, green and creme bed cover, a walnut armoire, a demi-lune table and a magenta chair.

The fourth bedroom is the largest.  It has twin beds that can be pushed together to form a king bed.  Bed covers and the chest of drawers and wardrobe are beautiful.  There is a pedestal sink in this bedroom.  Four windows look onto the bay.  The room is painted a dreamy color called tumbled marble.

These two bedrooms share a hallway bathroom that has a shower stall.

The old part of the house, which dates from 1830, has a sod roof.  You don't often see those.  The house is on two acres with wild grasses and cornflowers and there are many old stone walls separating the homesteads.  Streamstown Bay is directly in front of the house and there is a small beach.  A picnic table is at the side of the house, but it can be moved to the front so you can dine closer to the water. Seals come occasionally to frolic near the shore.

Ballyconnelly Golf Course is 20 km / 12 miles from the house. The terrific village of Clifden is 7 km / 4 miles. Dublin 197 km / 115 miles.

Babies are warmly welcome. A baby's cot and high chair are available for your use. This is a strict non-smoking property.  Pets are not allowed.

ACCESSIBILITY NOTICE:

This 1-storey house is excellent for those with moderate mobility limitations although please note that there are three steps down to the living room. The driveway is gravel.
