Shanes Cottage
County Galway, Ireland
Enter into a small hallway. The living room is on the left. It has two spiffy leather sofas, a coffee table, excellent lighting, a turf fireplace, very nice accessories, a TV and DVD player and a wood floor. Gorgeous custom-made curtains of Connemara tweed grace the large large window that looks toward the front yard.
Walk through the living room and into the eat-in kitchen. There is a stove with a gas 6-burner top and an electric oven, an under-counter refrigerator, a dishwasher, custom-made wood cabinets, superb lighting, granite counter tops, a marble floor. Two nice chairs frame a turf-burning fireplace and an antique dresser holds dishes and glassware. A window faces the back garden. The dining area has a pine table to seat 6.
French doors lead out to a patio that has a dining table for 6 and a barbecue. A utility room houses a washer and dryer, a freezer and a sink. The lovely, well tended garden raises to a wooded hillside.
One bedroom is off the kitchen. It has a dark mahogany bed that is an old fashioned double bed (it's slightly less wide than a modern standard double bed). There is a large wardrobe with an oval mirror on the door and drawers and hanging space. Other furniture includes two bedside tables, a mirror, a painted wood floor. Walls are light gray, floral blinds hang on windows that look onto the back garden. The adjacent private bathroom has a shower stall.
A second downstairs bedroom is to the right of the front entrance hall. It has a queen bed painted cream, a painted dresser, two bedside tables, a large mirror, a window seat, original floor boards, taupe walls. The en suite bathroom has a tub with shower over tub and a sink that's made from a table with a porcelain basin. One wall retains the original stone wall.
The third bedroom, the largest of the three, is upstairs. It has a queen bed painted crisp white, a painted dressing table, a double chest of drawers, a built-in wardrobe, two easy chairs, a large wool rug over the original wood floor. Windows provide a wide view of the back garden. The en suite bathroom has a tub with shower over tub. An antique chair that doesn't have a seat became a towel rack.
The cottage is right in the village of Clifden, a lively and sophisticated village in the Connemara area of County Galway. It is a 1-minute walk to the high street - the photo on the right was taken from the cottage's front yard.
There are excellent restaurants, authentic pubs, nice shops. A pebble beach is a few minutes from the cottage. Clifden is an excellent base for touring the Connemara, a hauntingly beautiful part of Ireland. There is much to see and do here: golf, of course, but other things as well. At every turn, there are activities and attractions, ancient sites, walking and hiking, water sports. You will never be bored in the Connemara.
Note that the bed in one of the bedrooms is called a double, but it's narrow. It might be better for one unless two are smallish. Children are warmly welcomed here. This is a strict non-smoking property.
