Killorglin – Luxury Period House

County Kerry, Ireland

spacer line

This lovely period house overlooks the River Laune.  It is cozy, spacious, beautifully decorated and very comfortable.

Enter the front door into a center hall that has a delightful mural of foul weather gear.  It's a hint of the charm throughout the house.  Turn left to the sitting room.  While not large, the room is stylish, warm and very comfortable.  It has two garnet red sofas and a big leather easy chair.  The fireplace has the original wood mantle.  Two pine dressers hold books and family photos.  Antiques and personal objects have been chosen with care and good taste.  The atmosphere is peaceful and rich and very Irish.

Across the hall is the very nice dining/music room.  The mahogany dining table seats 6 comfortably.  The room has an antique upright piano, a fireplace and a collection of personal treasures and art.  The floor is ceramic tile and walls are creamy white.  This is a lively and interesting room that complements the conversations that happen here.

Beyond the dining room is the large, eat-in kitchen.  We were there just as the owner was completing its total renovation and it's gorgeous.  It has a white Aga stove (and full directions for using it!), a dishwasher, a large refrigerator and all of the other necessary equipment.  The custom-made farmhouse table is perfect for dining and food preparation.  The floor is the same ceramic tile as in the dining room.   The wide kitchen window looks out onto the side garden.   A Dutch door opens to the back patio and the wide lawn area.

The kitchen opens onto the large conservatory.  It has three comfortable sofas upholstered in beige.  There is a gas fireplace, satellite TV, a DVD player, games, toys.  The There are two light and bright bedrooms on the main floor. They are similar in size and decor which is traditional and very warm.

Each room has a mahogany king bed covered with a custom-made silk quilt.  Storage is excellent and attractive.  The curtains and accessories are perfect choices. Views are of the front garden and the wide sky.

These bedrooms share a newly-remodeled hallway bathroom that has a tub with shower-over-tub.  The washer/dryer is in this bathroom.  The window looks to the back lawn area.

Upstairs, there is a nice, small bedroom that has twin  beds each covered with a white duvet.   Windows on two sides let in plenty of light.  Storage is excellent.

The narrow bathroom, right across a tiny hall, has a shower stall.

The house is on a large elevated site that is set back from the road.  The house is surrounded by gardens, tended lawns, trees and mature shrubs.  The back garden has a large stone patio and outdoor furniture.  The wide lawns are perfect for badminton and croquet or just lying on your back and counting the stars.  There are views of the McGillycuddy Reeks, Ireland's largest mountain range.

This house is just outside the terrific village of Killorglin, home of the annual Puck Fair.  The village has at least two excellent restaurants, a number of traditional pubs, very good shopping for food and other items.

Located on the Ring of Kerry, Killorglin is a perfect base for exploring the Ring, the Dingle Peninsula and the gorgeous Killarney National Forest.  There are many superb restaurants in the nearby villages in towns.  The scenery in Kerry is about the most beautiful in Ireland.  Kerry has more ancient stones than any other county.  There is a wide choice of golf courses nearby and gorgeous walking areas, fishing and boating.   The Blasket Island Center in Dingle is not to be missed.  We are happy to introduce you to an amazing guide who will show you parts of Kerry that few people know.

ACCESSIBILITY NOTICE:

This is a very good choice for those who have moderate mobility limitations.  You can park right in front of the door.   The path to the house is hard and flat.  Two bedrooms and a bathroom are downstairs, but the bathroom that has the shower cubicle is upstairs.  There are no stairs from the house out to the back patio.
