Jessica's Townhouse

County Galway, Ireland

spacer line

The house is located next door to the Clifden Founder's Mansion. The house, just west of the Mansion, faces Church Street and looks over treetops onto the village high street.  The steps up from Church Street lead to the front patio of the house where there are tables for outdoor dining or drinks before dinner.

As soon as you step into Jessica's, you'll notice the attention that's been given to every detail of the building and interior design.

The living room, dining room and large kitchen are open plan.  Two gorgeous custom-made sofas, upholstered in rich blue velvet, flank the fireplace.  Two comfortable easy chairs, upholstered oatmeal wool, provide additional seating.  Curtains are custom-made from the wool of Connemara sheep.  Taupe painted walls are reclaimed boards and the floor is oak.  A flat screen cable TV is linked to a surround-sound music system.  This is a bright, posh, comfortable and cozy room.

The custom-made dining table seats 8 under an antique chandelier.  A large round mirror seems to make the area even more open and generous than it is.  French doors in the dining area open onto a private patio that has outdoor furniture and a barbecue.  (That is the area that you see in the very top photo.) The modern kitchen area has stainless steel appliances (a microwave, dishwasher, hob, a self-cleaning oven, two refrigerators and a freezer).  The walls are stone, counter tops are white granite ("cashmere white", says Jessica) and simple cupboards are light green.  Off the kitchen, a small utility room has the a washer and dryer.  This may be a small kitchen, but we made several dinners here with ease and efficiency.

One of the bedrooms is off the dining room.  It has a standard double French bed that has a beautiful carved headboard and a thick, soft duvet with a crisp white cover.  There is a dressing table and chair, a built-in wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a dressing table. A custom-designed fireplace is opposite the bed (not shown, unfortunately).  Windows look to the front of the property.  The look is Continental, the atmosphere is serene.  The large en suite tiled bathroom has a tub with shower over tub, a modern wall-hung basin, a wall-to-wall mirror, teak shelves, light gray walls and olive and taupe floor tiles.

The three other bedrooms are upstairs.

The master bedroom  has a king-size 4-poster bed painted apple green.  There is a desk/dressing table and mirror, built-in wardrobe with shelves and space for hanging clothes, a comfortable antique chair.  There is a beautiful Victorian fireplace and a handmade chandelier that hangs from the painted wood ceiling.  Walls are several shades of taupe and cream rubbed into the wood.  The en suite bathroom has a large tub and a separate shower.  Olive tiles and the antique mirror add style to the bathroom.

The third bedroom has a custom-made standard double bed made of iron and brass. There are two bedside tables, an olive-painted armoire with a mirrored door, a comfortable chair, a fireplace.  Although not as large as the other bedrooms, this is a beautiful room that will soothe your spirits.  The tiled en suite bathroom has a shower.

The fourth bedroom has a king bed that can convert to twin beds. There is a writing desk/dressing table with a mirror, antique chairs, an armoire, mahogany bedside tables.  There is a fireplace, of course, of stone and wood.   The room has a high ceiling, a custom-made chandelier, beautiful art.   The shower in the en suite bathroom has one wall  that has a large glass panel in which Jessica has created a seascape of local beach stone and seaweed.  Our photo doesn't really do it justice - it's very creative.

The views from the top bedrooms are over the town to the hills around the harbor.

The house has under-floor heating and a thermostat in every room. There is both 220 and 110 electricity so you don't have to bring an adapter with you.

Children are warmly welcomed here.  Unfortunately, animals are not allowed.  We are happy to introduce you to a world-famous guide who will show you the secrets of this area,

Clifden is the jewel of the Connemara.  The sophisticated village has excellent restaurants, traditional pubs (all non-smoking), very good shopping including a high-end grocery store.  Clifden Harbour is a few minutes on foot.  Beaches are very close.  The Connemara is rocky and green and beautiful. There are many places to walk and gorgeous scenic drives.  This is home to the famous Connemara ponies.  You will never be bored in this part of Ireland.
