Stancombe Lakeside Temple
Gloucestershire, England
Legend has it that, in 1815, the Reverend Purnell-Edwards, the original owner of Stancombe, fell in love with a local gypsy girl and built the temple as their love-nest. Access was via a labyrinth of tunnels which were too narrow for his portly wife.
The owners have strived to create an intimate atmosphere of a secluded Cotswolds hideaway with a truly personal touch. Guests will enjoy the uniqueness of the location and the views of North Nibley Church and Tyndale's monument; an ideal outdoor break, they will have the freedom to explore the grounds which include a Chinese tea-house and an Egyptian ice-house. As a golf break, enthusiasts will enjoy a pay and play golf course 2 miles away on Stinchcombe Hill. This Cotswolds holiday cottage is a good base for exploring the southern Cotswolds, including Tetbury, The Slimbridge Wildlife Sanctuary and Westonbirt Arboretum. Bath is 35 miles away.

Unusual or interesting place in the area Midway between Dursley and Wotton-under-Edge, Stancombe Park lies at the head of a valley below Stinchcombe Hill, a famous landmark of south Gloucestershire. The park comes up to the house, and is separated from the upper garden by a sweeping drive. The garden is clearly divided into two parts; the upper garden, the nearest one to the house, has been created out of the existing parkland, a row of sweet chestnuts and a few more trees which indicate a planting for other purposes than purely ornamental. The second garden, or the historic Folly Garden, is a very different proposition. The garden is reached by a romantic path, dropping past two small lakes to the main one.

One thing visitors should not miss Walking the Cotswold Way:
The Cotswold Way National Trail is a long distance walk of approximately 100 miles that runs along the Cotswold escarpment between Bath and Chipping Campden. On the trail you will experience stunning views across the Severn Vale to Brecon Beacons in Wales, Malvern Hills and Forest of Dean. You will walk through beech woods and pasture enclosed with traditional dry stone walls, see charming villages with Cotswold stone cottages and pass through sites of historic interest.
Chedworth Roman Villa:
Remains of one of the largest Romano-British villas in the country. Over one mile of walls survives and there are several fine mosaics, two bathhouses, hypocausts, a water-shrine and latrine. Set in a wooded Cotswold combe near Cheltenham, the site was excavated in 1864 and still has a Victorian atmosphere.
